WWE Considering Bringing Up Samoa Joe For Royal Rumble

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

– The backstage rumor is that Samoa Joe is expected to debut either at the Royal Rumble as a surprise entrant or shortly thereafter.

He has only competed in a dark match recently for NXT and has lost to Shinsuke Nakamura two times in a row, which would seem to support an upcoming promotion to the main roster.

No word when Joe will debut with WWE, he will be heavily pushed and be involved in one of the top matches at WrestleMania. This is quite a turnaround for a guy who Vince McMahon was never high on due to his physique.

Did You Know?

In April of 1976, the legendary Bruno Sammartino suffered a broken neck at the hands of Stan “The Lariat” Hansen in a cage match for the WWWF Title in Madison Square Garden. While Hansen is most remembered for his amazing career in Japan, Sammartino fans will remember it was Bruno who returned in an astonishing five months to regain his WWWF Title in a rematch against The Bad Man from Borger, Texas.

The movie Nacho Libre is loosely based on the real life, friar-turned-luchadore to provide for the children of his orphanage: Reverend Sergio Gutierrez Benitez, also known by his alter ego, Fray Tormenta. “Get that corn oughtta mah face!”

Musical group The Mountain Goats won critical acclaim in 2015 with their pro wrestling-themed album, Beat the Champ. The album features songs about Bruiser Brody, Chavo Guerrero (Sr.), heel turns, and foreign objects – all things wrestling fans can get behind. Give it a listen here!

Goldberg racked up an amazing (and completely ridiculous) 173 wins before being beaten by Kevin Nash in the infamous “cattle prod” match at Starrcade ’98. The Streak held for an unbelievable fifteen months when it finally ended in a collective “Wha-huh?” at the last ppv of the year – the second head-scratching ending and overall disappointing Starrcade in a row.

Before his premature death in 2011, “Sweet and Sour” Larry Sweeney held the ICW-ICWA Texarkana Television Title 27 times. The title had a similar 24-hour rule like the WWF Hardcore title which “The Golden Palomino” utilized to become the most decorated title holder over a six year span.

Neville Talks Being ‘Above’ WWE Cruiserweights, What Gives Him Advantages In The Ring, More

– WWE Superstar Neville recently participated in a interview with NOLA.com and discussed and wide variety of topics, check out the highlights below:

On his match with Kevin Owens in New Orleans last year:

“I’ve had a few matches with Kevin Owens. I can recollect him taking advantage of me somehow underhandedly and me being walked and trampled all over and allowing it to happen. I look back at those matches and kind of see myself as a fool, a little bit too honest.

“That’s all I think about when I think about my past matches. In the future, it’s going to be different, and you’re going to see it clear in front of your eyes.”

On being the ‘King of the Cruiserweights’:

“King of the Cruiserweights is not just something I say. Let me be straight. I am the king. You can see that. It’s undeniable. You watch the show and you can tell, I’m a league above the rest of the cruiserweights. I want that to be known. This isn’t just a label. This is a fact. I am the king.”

On his favorite wrestlers growing up:

“Shawn Michaels was always a favorite of mine. Before that, I idolized Dynamite Kid. Also, Eddie Guerrero. I liked guys who were similar to me in style. You can say I’ve adapted my style after these guys, the smaller guys that I can relate to.”

You’ve wrestled all over the world, how has that helped you in the WWE?

“It just made me the most well-rounded I could be. I’ve got experience from all styles from all continents from all territories. That’s what gives me an advantage in the cruiserweight division. I believe that I am more well-rounded than any of these other cruiserweights. That is indicative of the journey that I took and the path that I chose.”
