Last week on “Smackdown Live,” AJ Styles shocked the world when he defeated Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship.
According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan for the show was for Styles to beat Rusev to become the fifth man of the blue brand’s “Survivor Series” team.
At this time, the reason why Vince McMahon changed directions isn’t clear. Dave Meltzer believes that Mahal’s title reign was to appease to the fans in India, and if he was to lose the title, it would have been certainly be after WWE’s appearances in New Delhi on December 8 and 9.
You can see footage of the match below:
The “Modern Day Maharaja” was originally scheduled to compete against the Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar at “Survivor Series,” in a champion vs. champion match.
It should also be noted that those who needed to be aware of the title change weren’t told about it until the day before the match. Furthermore, those people weren’t clear about whether Mahal would get it back before the pay-per-view, since Lesnar’s programs are all booked well in advance.
I still think that it was a big mistake to take the title off of Jinder Mahal at this point. He had such incredible momentum going for him, and has become one of the top members of the WWE roster. However, I am looking forward to seeing where WWE goes with this, and where the storyline will go.
