Ringside News has recently created an article explaining the potential reason behind the lengthy WWE PPVs of 2018 so far.
Increasingly obvious to wrestling fans, WWE has been holding longer PPVs this year. While WrestleMania shows are generally an outlier due to the nature of what they are, shows like the Greatest Royal Rumble and Backlash have been very lengthy.
One reason we speculate ourselves is due to the brand split. With both Raw and SmackDown Live working on one show, there are more feuds and Championship bouts to consider. This has applied for every PPV show this year besides Fastlane and Elimination Chamber.
The main event of Backlash was controversial to many as it didn’t even start until after 11 at night and wasn’t for a Championship. This caused many fans to leave the arena to get home.
Bryan Alvarez discussed this on Wrestling Observer Live in detail, listing one of the main reasons they’ve decided to hold longer shows.
Here is what he had to say:
“One of the corporate reasons for longer shows is because they love to go on [investor calls] and say ‘the WWE Network was viewed for more time this month.’ How do you make sure people are watching more WWE Network than ever? You make the shows longer. That’s what they’re doing. It has nothing to do with people walking out during Roman Reigns matches.”
Wrestling Rumors will continue to update you as more information does come out on this entire concept.
