Stephanie McMahon Says Fans Determine Who Becomes A Star

We have the power. Stephanie McMahon is never one to back away from an interview. She can be heard talking to various outlets almost all the time and a lot of those are about business strategy. These are often about how WWE listens to its fans, which can provide some very interesting ways of looking at things.

McMahon was recently interviewed by Fortune.com, which focuses on how WWE grows by learning from its fans. The article talks about how WWE learns what its fans want in real time and the importance of NXT, which is said to be what determines who makes it to the next level. Here are some quotes:

“We’re taking feedback in real time.”

On NXT:

“Our audience is actually determining who makes it to the next level—and they know it.”

“Our audience tells us what they love, what they don’t like, and—worst—what they don’t care about.”

You can read the full article here.

Here’s McMahon at one of those events that the fans wanted:

Opinion: McMahon isn’t wrong that the fans often dictate what happens, but I don’t know how many people would actually believe that’s all that matters. There are several factors to what goes into WWE programming, many of which we would probably never think of nor care about. We’ve heard this mentality for years and in those same years, we’ve also had discussions about how fans are never listened to. There’s a middle ground for sure, and that’s where we’ve always lived.

What do you think of McMahon’s comments? Does WWE listen to its fans? Let us know in the comments below.

Wade Barrett Discusses His Departure From WWE, Returning to the Ring

Former WWE superstar Wade Barrett was recently interviewed by SPORTbible where we discussed a number of topics. Among them were his appointment as General Manager of WCPW, his departure from WWE, returning to the ring and more.

Below are some highlights from the interview:

SPORTbible: First of all, how are you enjoying your stint in WCPW/Defiant Wrestling as the new General Manager?

Stu Bennett: It’s a lot of fun! I kind of took a break from the wrestling industry for a little while and did some other stuff – did some acting, some TV hosting, but WCPW had me involved when I did a tour not so long ago and I did some stuff for them. I was actually really impressed with the company and so when the chance came to come back in, in this kind of role, I had to take it.

SPORTbible: You left WWE just after Wrestlemania 32. What were reasons why you asked to be released?

Stu Bennett: I didn’t really ask to be released. My contract was coming to an end, I’d been there just over nine years at that point – I was not happy with the way my creative had gone and not happy with some stuff behind the scenes, and the way I’d been treated by certain people there, so in my opinion it was time to move on and do something else, at least for a while. I’d been offered a new contract by them, I didn’t want to sign; I told them, I was upfront with them. I don’t think they were thrilled about it but there’s not a lot you can do – I felt that I was wasting my time there.

SPORTbible: Is there an intention to get back in the ring or are you enjoying the schedule at the moment?

Stu Bennett: I have my good days and bad days. There’s days where I think I don’t miss it all and then there’s days like yesterday [at Refuse to Lose on October 2] where you see the kind of reactions the guys were getting and get that desire to get back in the ring. I’m 99 per cent certain I will wrestle again at some point, I just couldn’t tell you when. I have those days where I’m like “no, everything hurts, I don’t ever wanna get back in a wrestling ring again” – but I have days where I feel great and can’t wait to get back in. I know at some point I’ll be wanting to get back in, so if the right opportunity comes along we’ll get it done.

They also talk about the “Bad News” Barrett gimmick, some word association and more.

Jim Ross Comments On Whether WWE Should Halt Roman Reigns’ Push

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross was recently interviewed by Pop Culture to promote his new book, “Slobberknocker: My Life In Wrestling.” He discussed a number of topics, including who he would take if he was starting a wrestling promotion, his thoughts on Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks and Bray Wyatt, and more.

Below are some highlights from the interview:

If Ross were to start his own promotion tomorrow, which WWE Superstar would he bring along?

“I would probably take, because it would be instant credibility to get me started with my imaginary company, Brock Lesnar.”

“Because he’s got name identity, durability, believability, and he would probably more closely represent my stylistic approach that I would probably want to take if I was spending my own money to create a wrestling product.”

[This post contains video, click to play]

Should WWE consider altering Roman Reigns’ big push?

“Well, I think you just got to continue to allow him to be pretty good. You know, whenever the time is opportune. He is better than pretty good and a good kid, realgood kid. Very committed.”

“There’s nothing you say on TV, there’s no pillow vignettes, let’s change his music, let’s change his hair color, let’s change his outfit. You know, let’s change for change’s sake. Let’s change not knowing the selection, but just change for change sake. Because well, it might work. It might not. Steer the course and not be so wrapped up in getting him accepted as a fan favorite or a villain. I accept him as a star. And that’s what Roman Reigns is, he’s a star.”

Which floundering superstar will be a WWE Champion next?

“Probably Sasha,” he said. “I think Bray Wyatt’s an amazing upside. I think he’s a character baby face and I think Sasha Banks is a neutral hee.”

“Bray Wyatt to me is, you don’t have an audience that supports your entrance by being a firefly if they don’t like you,” he reasoned. So I think there’s a foundation there to be a very bizarre, mysterious character babyface.”

“Sasha seems to be at her base, she seems to be at this, as a TV character, as far as how she comes across in my living room when she has a little edge to her and just a little bit of a heel.”
